When John the Baptist saw Jesus approaching, he declared: “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” Jesus came because humanity's deepest problem required more than inspiration. We needed salvation. Sin is not merely making occasional mistakes. It is rebellion against God that separates human beings from the holy God for whom we were created. We cannot remove our guilt by becoming slightly better versions of ourselves. So God provided what we could not provide. Jesus is the Lamb. The sacrificial imagery reaches deep into the biblical story and ultimately points toward the cross, where Christ gives Himself for sinners. This protects Christianity from becoming merely a self-development programme. Jesus did not come primarily to help good people become more successful. He came to save sinners. Before thinking about everything you hope Jesus will change around you, remember the extraordinary work He came to accomplish for you.
