Let Your Yes Be Yes

Jesus teaches: “Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and your ‘No’ be ‘No.’” Faithfulness includes becoming a person whose words can be trusted. If you say you will do something, do it. If circumstances genuinely prevent you, communicate honestly. Don't promise simply because saying yes feels easier in the moment. Sometimes integrity requires saying: “No, I cannot commit to that.” That may be more loving than saying yes and repeatedly failing to follow through. Reliability grows from hundreds of ordinary decisions. Keeping appointments. Honouring commitments. Arriving when expected. Returning what you borrowed. Communicating when plans change. People should not have to decode whether our words mean what they appear to mean.
