Pause & Reflect
The Holy Spirit does not suddenly appear for the first time in Acts. At the opening of Scripture, the Spirit of God is present over the waters. From creation onward, Scripture reveals the Spirit working throughout God's purposes. He empowered people for particular tasks. Spoke through prophets. Was promised in connection with the coming Messiah and God's new covenant work. Descended upon Jesus. And was poured out upon the Church. Seeing this larger biblical picture protects us from treating the Holy Spirit as a specialised subject for a particular kind of Christian. The Spirit belongs to the story of God from beginning to end. The same God whose Spirit moved at creation is at work bringing new life and transformation in His people. Your Christian life is part of a story much larger than your personal experiences.
Declare It Today
“The Holy Spirit has been active throughout God's redemptive story. I will understand His work through the whole counsel of Scripture and recognise that my life belongs within God's greater purposes.”
Let's Pray
Spirit of God, open my understanding as I read Scripture. Help me see Your work throughout God's story and keep me from building my beliefs on isolated experiences rather than Your Word. Amen.
